TrendForce has published a forecast for the global market for foldable smartphones equipped with a flexible OLED display. Advances in technology, improvements in design and performance have contributed to the growing popularity of such devices.
TrendForce takes into account the supply of two types of foldable devices. These are, in particular, models in the clamshell form factor that fold vertically. Such gadgets are convenient to carry in your pocket or small handbag. The second type is smartphones that fold horizontally: when opened, they can become an alternative to a small tablet.
Also, we note that in terms of design, smartphones with a flexible display have two models in which the screen folds in and out. So, in the first case, an auxiliary external display is required, while in the second there is a risk of damage to the flexible panel.
TrendForce: New brand flagships are anticipated to increase market penetration of foldable smartphones to about 1.1% in 2022
Currently, the flexible screen size of vertical foldable smartphones varies from 6.5 to 7.0 inches diagonally. For devices that fold horizontally, this figure is 7.5-8.0 inches. The refresh rate reaches 120Hz.
“According to TrendForce, as technology and materials evolve, the penetration rate of OLED folding smartphones will reach 1.1% in 2022 according to expectations. While mobile phone brands successive launch new flagship folding devices, penetration rate will exceed 2.5% post-2024. Driven by improved specifications and increasingly competitive pricing. In addition, there is an opportunity to provide a breath of fresh air to a market steeped in sluggish consumer sentiment. Led by inflation and drive folding mobile phones into the mainstream”.
Also, according to TrendForce forecasts, by the end of the current year, the penetration of foldable smartphones with a flexible display will reach approximately 1.1%. After 2024, the value will exceed 2.5%. Currently, the leading supplier of flexible panels for smartphones is Samsung Display Company.
