On August 10th, Samsung officially released two flagship foldable smartphones. The company released the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The new generation Flip comes with a larger battery but both smartphones use the same low-power-consuming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. However, the Galaxy Flip 4 comes with a slightly bigger battery than its predecessor. While the Galaxy Flip 3 comes with a 3300 mAh battery, the Galaxy Flip 4 comes with a 3700 mAh battery. Thus, which of these smartphones actually performs better in terms of battery life?
On paper, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 12% increment relative to the Galaxy Flip 3. The main dissatisfaction of users with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the slow charging speed and short battery life. The Samsung Galaxy Flip 3 only supports 15W charging, while the new Flip 4 has Samsung’s current flagship 25W fast charging technology.
While the two smartphones are nearly identical in body size, Samsung crammed a large battery in the Flip 4, a full 400 mAh more than the 3300mAh battery in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. But can this extra 400 mAh battery help the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 solve the most critical problem of battery life? Let’s go straight to the results.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Galaxy Flip 3 test
Both smartphones were set to the same brightness and connected to WiFi and stayed that way throughout for comparison. Also, both phones went through two rounds of battery drain tests: web browsing and watching YouTube videos. The result is shown in the table below
|Model||Web Browsing||YouTube Video|
|Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3||10 hours 13 minutes||7 hours 10 minutes|
|Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4||11 hours 40 minutes||9 hours 45 minutes|
In the first round, for web-based usage scenarios, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a battery life of 10 hours and 13 minutes, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a battery life of 11 hours and 40 minutes. That said, the new Flip 4 lasts an hour and 27 minutes longer in web browsing than its predecessor. The next round was watching a YouTube video. In this test, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 lasted 7 hours and 10 minutes, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 lasted 9 hours and 45 minutes. This means that the Flip 4 will last a full 2 hours and 35 minutes longer than the Flip 3 when watching videos.
