A few years ago, LG was one of the most important smartphone makers in this competitive segment. However, with the growing competition from China, the company failed to keep up. This might be a personal opinion, but in recent years, everything we saw from LG was a plethora of boring smartphones that always felt somewhat behind the competition. You can list the company’s delay to leave behind the wide notch solution or gimmicks in the software, but the LG G series has become less attractive. This year, the company finally understood this problem and dropped its former flagship series in favor of a new smartphone dubbed LG Velvet. The handset adopts a modern design with competitive hardware, but fails in one aspect – it’s priced wrongly.

The LG Velvet grabbed a lot of attention initially for marketing a pretty drastic design shift for the Korean firm. Interestingly enough, it also signified a possible move away from flagship devices like the phone sports the mid-range Snapdragon 765G SoC.  However, when it launched, the customers were not so happy with the price. Despite this, LG is confident enough that this phone is enough to push forward the company’s popularity across the globe. For that reason, it has announced today’s wider availability for the Velvet.

Currently, the LG Velvet is available in South Korea. In the coming months, the company will be taking it to Europe and North America. Specifically, the list will include Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, and Poland this month. North America, Latin America, Assia, The Middle East, and Africa will get it in the “weeks ahead”.

LG Velvet specifications

The LG Velvet features a very simple design reminiscent of 2020 smartphones featuring slim bezels and a waterdrop notch at the top. It’s a 6.8-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution and in-display fingerprint scanner. The handset carries the excellent Snapdragon 765G SoC under the hood which has its 5G capabilities baked by the Snapdragon X52 modem. The handset also has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with microSD card support included.

Moving around to the back, we have a triple-rear camera setup featuring a raindrop design. The setup comprises a 48MP main + 8MP ultrawide + 5MP depth sensor. On the front, we have a 16MP shooter living inside of the notch. The Velvet draws power from a 4,300mAh battery with 25W fast-charging support. The handset also sports 9W wireless charging. Although the pricing for the new regions is yet to surface, it should cost around $700. Once again, this isn’t a competitive price for a device with such specs. The Redmi K30 Pro, for example, has better specifications and costs less.
